Thanks Bill,
I recently bought a Dewalt 2-speed Planer. I checked at Home Depot and Woodcrafters and Rockler...all the same price. They had other makes of planers, but none had the speed option. I really wanted that Dewalt, but the price was a bit more than my budget was. So, I headed home w/o. On a whim, I stopped at Sears. Low and behold the same Dewalt was on sale for about $100.00 less!!! SOLD! I've been using it to surface/dimension pinblock material. It works like a charm! Tried some Spruce just to see how the finished surface would be....Really nice! I'm a happy camper!<G>

I second Joe’s opinions on cheap is not the way to go. When I first started putting my woodworking shop together I bought a lot of Grizzly tools based on perceived reputation, I mean they advertise everywhere so people must be happy with there tools, right? Well, a 3rd of what I bought had to returned and replaced immediately because of manufacturing defects. I also bought their 14” “Ultimate band saw” with the riser package and within months of using destroyed the quick tension release, replaced it with the Carter system and it works ok now, but I wish it had a little more power. The last tool I purchased from them (and ever will) was an air filtration unit. It had the same specs as Delta and Jet but was about $100 cheaper. After about 13 months (one month out of warranty), it stopped working. They sold me a new Capacitor…didn’t fix it, they sold me a new circuit board…didn’t fix it, and they wanted to sell me a new motor which was out of stock and would cost me $100 when it came in. At that point I trashed it, and bought the Jet, which I’ve been happy with ever since. My bottom line is; I will never but from Grizzly again.

My motto is: but the best you can even if it hurts the wallet now, because if you buy only what you can afford, it hurts a lot worse down the road.
Peace
Bill Costanzo

Mark Purney asked: "I'm still planning my shop and I've got my eye on this bandsaw. I was
curious to hear opinions from those who do lots of shop work if this is
a good choice. I consider this one of the most important tools, and I
don't want to regret my decision later on."

Mark,
Although the 17" is probably more bandsaw than you'd ever need, if you have room for one, then the size is o.k. However, I wouldn't recommend Grizzly. Parts can be an issue and I've heard things in that regard. I'd settle for a good quality band saw, however. Cheap is not the way to go. You are correct to consider the band saw to be one of the major tools of a good rebuilding shop. I use mine practically every day. I would recommend the Powermatic brand.
Regards,
Joe
