So one question re hard hammer tolerance is what's better: beefier rib scale
or thicker panel and why would you choose one over the other.

Almost certainly, given the hammers that are put on these 
thick commercial boards. I've gotten considerably more hammer 
tolerance by just beefing up the rib scales some, without 
losing any of the other properties I like about these things.
