I made this mistake a long time ago. A nice looking car makes a huge difference! Don't go get an older Dodge Colt station wagon and put a sign on it just because it gets 40 mpg!! Didn't work too well! Didn't matter if I was The King of Piano tuning, people make early judgements. As somebody said, "You only get one chance to make a first impression." So true...so true... Why didn't anyone tell me that years ago! Dressing up professionally is also a key. A doctoral student here, who always wears a suit and tie, told me, "Don't dress for where you are, but dress for where you want to be!" Good words to live by. (of course, I still need to wear jeans and sweatshirts often in the shop, day to day, as I find the need to get dirty crawling around under pianos, etc). When I know I'm only (hopefully) tuning, or concert tuning, I dress to the max (sans tux), with my Steinway work-smock on. People in our culture, like it or not, are crazy about cars. Piano technicians often work in upscale neighborhoods. Your car should put you on equal footing with these clients. I love my 2005 Acura MDX. Plenty of cargo for my needs, all wheel drive that gets you where you need to even in adverse weather, and it clearly states to my clients: Quality. It also does an adequate job towing my piano moving trailer. As a Honda product, it has steller reliablity. The MDX has been rated Consumer Reports top mid-size luxery SUV. Gas mileage? Not the greatest, (average around 18-19) but it is solid and safe. The other vehicle I considered was a Lexus RX-330. It just didn't have enough cargo room for me. But they are NICE. -- Ryan Sowers, RPT Puget Sound Chapter Olympia, WA www.pianova.net[attachment "mdx.bmp" deleted by Paul T Williams/Music/UNL/UNEBR] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
