[pianotech] Missing Piano

Yes. I have that happen at my college where we have 90 pianos. Some get
moved around to various locations for one reason or another to be found
later on usually by me after traipsing all over the campus looking for it
because nobody has any clue where it went. As always, it is in the last
place I look instead of in the first.

Hi Ryan,
I see you're in Olympia WA. You could pass them onto John Grace. He's one
of our graduates of the Piano Hospital. He graduated back in 1958. He also
moves pianos.

On another note, have any of you had a school misplace a piano? lol One of
the elementry schools where I tune is convinced that they only have 3
pianos. One of the music teachers e-mailed me, I spoke with someone in the
office, adn a costodian told me that there are only 3. My list says there
are 4. Somewhere there is a poor Wurlitzer without a home. :-)

If the animal smell effects you physically, tell you can't come to the house
anymore because you're allergic to pet dander, dog pee smells, etc. etc.

If you're not allergic, and you still want to tune the piano, as far as
getting her to shut up, it is best to be direct with the customer. Sometimes
they don't understand that you need it quiet. So tell her you need to
concentrate on listing to the piano, and with her talking to you, you not
only can't concentrate on what she is telling you, you can't hear the piano.
On top of that, tell her that people talking in the vicinity of where you're
working interferes with your ability to hear the piano. You can't stop her
from being rude to her husband, but hopefully she'll lay off him long enough
for you to get out of there.

Dear list,

I have a client that I just dread and have basically decided that I am not
willing to service her piano anymore. The animal smell is just awful, the
person is hard of hearing and talks way too much (she goes on and on and on
and won't let you get a word in edgewise) and is too loud, and is rude to
her husband, etc. etc.

How do others deal with wanting to "fire" a customer graciously?

Subject: [pianotech] Essex EUP-123 keytop?

Hi List,

Does anyone have any spare Essex keytops available that they'd be willing to
sell? I'm afraid that the Steinway dealer in my area has none currently in
stock, and they're on back order from Steinway NY. A client of mine needs a
replacement, and they'll only settle for the "real thing"! I tried using a
Schaff part, but the luster was different. I tried a Boston keytop but the
dimensions were slightly different. Can anyone help me? Many thanks!

When I ordered a "keytop" from Steinway, they sent me a plastic sheet about
a foot square, and I was supposed to cut my own. I suggest you use a keytop
you get from one of the supply houses. Chances are, it will look just like
the others. If anything, you might have to trim it a little, but no more
than if you had an "original" part.

Depending on the age of the piano, any keytop will not

exactly match the aged originals.

Maybe try a Pearl River keytop? That might
match.
