Hi,

The stuff that old steering wheels were made of was cellulose, the  
same stuff that old fountain pens were made of. It could be softened  
with acetone, and reshaped, perhaps what your wife's grandfather was  
doing. The acrylic acetate that Jack uses is a modern imitation of the  
stuff, and much more stable.
