Many Thanks, Marc, for starting this thread! I have been struggling with the same question. I've been in the business for over 30 years, but have always tuned part-time--12:00 to 1:00 for uprights and 2:00 to even 3:00 for grands, except in the high treble where I would do it at 12:00. Several years ago I took a class from Mitch Kiel, who objected and wanted me to tune at 12:00 all the time, but I never could until I recently got a new Jahn tuning hammer. Since I tune so little, it is always a struggle for me to develop a new habit and I have been wondering whether I should stay with the old way, or continue trying to make the change to 12:00. Diane Hofstetter Marc: I'm another in the over 30 years category. I use the 2:00 - 3:00 position on both uprights and grands. My thinking has been that I can't (or won't) set the pin as well if I'm uncomfortable and the positions you mention just seem uncomfortable. Of course the closer I get to C8 in tuning the treble on a vertical the hammer has to go up to 12:00 but that's the only time. dave David M. Porritt, RPT Diane Hofstetter
