[pianotech] Favorite Piano Recordings

Hi Rob:

 

Since I believe the intent of the those recommending that you listen to
piano recordings is to get you to listen to the VOICE of the piano as part
of the fabric of MUSIC, I will offer some recommendations.

 

Because  we live in the land of Steinway, I will offer you the following
recording as an example of an exceptionally well voiced Steinway.   Listen
to "The Magic of Satie", by Jean-Yves Thibaudet (Decca 289 470 290-2)..  The
piano absolutely drips with color and texture, with a sound like burnished
gold.  I believe the piano was voiced by Ulrich Gerhard, the great London
Steinway technician.   This instrument definitely falls into the "piano to
die for" category.

 

Also, "Credo", by Helene Grimaud; "Bach Partitas Nos. 1, 3, & 6" by Richarde
Goode; and "Shubert Piano Sonatas D.958, 959, 960" by Murray Perahia.  

 

And just about anything by Arthur Rubenstein.

 

Why Joni Mitchell, David?  I've been told she only plays the black keys!  J

Use the above link - I would start with the Ravel CD.

These are the finest piano recordings that I have ever heard.

Custom piano work by Peter Clark RPT CTE and the recording engineer as well
- Sally Christian is the artist.

Peter is one of the finest voicers that I know.

I had the opportunity to take some voicing classes at last week's convention
(all were excellent).  One of the many messages coming out of these was the
need to do a fair bit of time just listening to piano performances.  I know
that a recording can never match a live performance (and I plan to attend
more recitals) but I've also realized that my personal recording library is
seriously lacking.

 

But, where to start?  There are easily thousands (millions?) of piano
recordings out there.  So, I thought I'd come back to this group and ask:
What are your favorite piano recordings?  Who is your favorite pianist?  Is
there a specific recording that, "no library is complete without it"?  All
inputs are appreciated.

 

The convention was AWESOME!
