I estimate the time and parts, giving the customer an approximate price
and making them aware that it does not include any unforeseen circumstances
that may arise.
When I'm in the shop I keep track of how long I've been on the repair/job in
question and if something arises that will substantially change the amount I
originally quoted. I stop and consult the customer before proceeding.

This is not a common thing, it doesn't happen often I do believe in covering
my tail, however. In other words, I never say never!
