I feel that you need to learn about the theory of equal temperament.

I had to prove my knowledge of equal temperament to a colleague by him
asking me to provide a sheet with all the frequencies of each note on the
piano followed by the beat rates of all intervals.

I had to then show him how I calculated the beat rates of any given
interval, mainly 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 3rds, 10ths, 2 octave and a third, triple
octave a third, double octave and minor 7th etc.

Then I had to tune the piano for him, and BTW having all those numbers
spinning in my head actually makes tuning easier.

Get yourself a book on equal temperament, and have some fun with a
calculator!

I have two books, one from Yamaha and the other one written by Wayne Stuart,
now Stuart and Sons piano manufacturer.

To explain, F33 to A#38 beats a little under 1 beat a second and B39 to E44
beats just over 1 beat a second.(you need to work this out) How else can you
get progressing 3rds & 6ths without having these subtle changes in beat
speeds. To be honest, I concentrate on my 3rds, 6ths, 10ths etc more than my
4ths and 5ths, but you still need to understand the relationship of other
intervals to tune to a high standard. Watch an international standard
pianist try a piano.. they love 3rds 6ths and 10ths, and will question you
on these more than 4ths and 5ths.

The Yamaha tuning test and graph that was used for examinations at The
Sydney Conservatorium of Music, followed by The North Metropolitan TAFE
College in Melbourne , and the Yamaha Tuning School in Hamamatsu proves the
above.

The other tuning tests (non electronic) that I had the experience of in
other factories also confirms this.

Equal Temperament is not to be confused with Equal Beating.

Do fourths beat faster as they climb chromatically? How about fifths?
