[pianotech] Weird Pease Grand

Hmm, I just finished rebuilding a 1962 S&S L, including restringing, but didn't notice any "plate horn wedges"...or at least none fell out when I destrung it. I had never seen these before and so I had no inclination to even look to see if there were any.

And I'm curious as to *why* you suggest waiting to put the wedges in place until AFTER the piano is initially strung. Would it not be easier and perfectly acceptable to at least tape them in place before stringing? (I know you mentioned using tape, but I'm not sure if you meant before stringing). In any case, the gentleman who does the restringing is a veteran tech and no doubt will know the proper installation of these aforementioned "plate horn wedges". At least I hope he does, lol!

These are "plate horn wedges", similar to Steinway. The wedges should be put back in place after you've added strings to the piano, but before you chip it up to pitch. If you have too much tension on the strings after you've put them on, you'll need to jam the wedges in with a hammer. You can also try to hold them in place with masking tape until you've chipped the piano.

I had taken some pics for before & after reference, and this is the best pic I found that shows the area where those little "wedges" fit. Two of three "spaces" are visible in this pic.
