Rob - I'm sure in California used piano prices are higher than here in the Midwest. In Iowa, we see old uprights free for the hauling all the time in the shopper and on tradeo. Take a look in a local newspaper to see what the going price in your area is. It sounds as if it would be a fun project piano. If you do happen to buy it and do the work, take plenty of pictures along the way to start building a portfolio. Are you a member of the PTG?
