piano plate cleaning/polishing

Is the plate in the piano or out?  If out, diluted ammonia works wonders.

  Hello,

  I would like to clean or polish a very dull plate on a Steinway 1956 B. I´ve read about using diluted white vinegar but it just does´nt do the trick for me. Any suggestions?
