Google just buys the maps from the government approved or sponsored third parties. NAVTEQ pretty much provides the map data to all the online maps including Google, Mapquest, Yahoo!, MSN etc. If you think satellite data is an infringement, take a look at the California Coastline Project. They flew a helicopter just offshore for the entire length of California and photographed the entire coastline. Not nearly as close a look at peoples homes as Google's Street View but still pretty amazing. See: http://www.californiacoastline.org/ Once you are outside of your home, with few exceptions, you are pretty much in the public domain. I've seen the Google Street View camera driving around. Looks very other worldly. It's just a clamp on rack that goes on top of the cars roof. It's a black box with a small post sticking out of it and sitting on top is a black spinning ball about 8" or 10" in diameter. The driver is just driving around, probably following a pre-laid out route, and this thing just spins and takes a photo in every direction about once a second or so. -- G • Geoff Sykes, RPT • 626-799-7545 • www.ivories52.com <http://www.ivories52.com/> -----Original Message----- From: pianotech-bounces at ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces at ptg.org] On Behalf Of Scott Jackson Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2008 3:23 PM To: 'Pianotech List' Subject: RE: The ethics of cameras Fenton, If you found that people were upset with you for photographing their property, then how did USA residents react to Google Maps Street View (http://maps.google.com/)? It seems that Google has no qualms taking pictures of peoples property. I must say that I was taken aback to find that they have been secretly filming everyone's front door in Australia. Satellite pictures were bad enough, but these close-up street-scapes do make you feel uneasy. How and why are they financing such a huge undertaking? I got the idea to shoot some of the more interesting homes belonging to my clients, then approach them with the idea of selling some of these photos. BAD IDEA!! Not only were they not interested in the photos, they were upset with me taking pictures of their property. Lesson learned. Fenton No virus found in this incoming message.
