Patrick, I agree. I have reamed tuning pin holes free hand many times. I do it with what I call soft hands. I let the drill bit or reamer guide the drill into the hole. I never had a problem. As far as I'm concerned, I would like to have consistency throughout the piano. These pianos will outlast the ship their on. I am concerned for the techs who service them and the ease of service. Terry made a great point about a piano on the Inspiration. We installed 1/0's into 0/0 pin size. The pin size went from .266 to .276 and the feel was horrible, (well a pro wouldn't @#$%$# too much) I felt the holes should have been reamed. And a pin difference of .004 is solidly acceptable. I do plan on reaming by hand. I feel a jig set up to "guide" the drill would by nature overrule the original hole. Physics. And it also seems a bit more intrusive. I will be very consistent, with each hole, I have plenty of feel for the wood. Like filing hammers, or sanding wood, one gets a feel for the materials. If you're consistent you get consistent results. Thanks all for your insights. Patrick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Get the MapQuest Toolbar.
