regilding plate

Hi Rick.

Your question raises another interesting question :

When you anyway plan on restringing, is there any reason why you would like to leave the plate in the piano instead of removing it for spraying (short of heavy weight) ? Suspecting tensions on the belly ?

BTW, I now use to remove the plate and spray. I like the Motip system, spraying one layer primer, then 3 layers antique gold acrylic, then 3 layers clear varnish. All layers at 30 minutes interval. What I like very much with Motip is that it … fills the scratches in the original finish. No need to japan or sand, the result is nice and smooth. On a scratch, simply reduce the spraying distance a tiny bit, and the fog becomes more like liquid, which does the filling. Not so with other brands though.

Best regards.

Stéphane Collin.

List,

When not removing plate in a grand that is being restrung, do you prefer spraying or brushing? I've used bronzing powder in the past , but was wondering what method some of the other rebuilders on this list like.

Thanks,
