David, I have rebuilt almost as many Conovers as Steinways. I have put new soundboards a couple. I see a lot of them here in Chicago, they were built just down the river a bit in Oregon, IL. The factory is still standing but it is a shopping center/ community center now. They are very solid pianos with big beefy frames. The problems you are likely to see besides the usual for a 70+ year old instrument will generally be in their key sticks. They didn't use the best wood here, I am not sure what specie they used but they are more prone to problems than most pianos of this vintage. The key mortise's wear fast and often need extensive repair... see recent journal article. I did have one quite awhile ago with a lot of out right broken keys. New buttons, and even a plate on the bottom of the key and new front mortise's should take care of any problems. All in all these are one of my favorite pianos to rebuild. I have rarely been disappointed with the result. good luck. -- Andrew Remillard ANRPiano.com 2211 Curtiss St. Downers Grove, IL 60515 630-852-5058 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
