A planed, square cut on the resurfacing is a much more professional appearance. And it looks better too. The 'notch' can also be used as an index for for installation. You have more control/precision with routing than sawing. No need to clamp, which can cause drift. Tape is a better stabilizer. I would caution though on the adhesive which can leave a residue. Adding another task...clean up.
