Baldwin "whoosh"

Hi list,
I worked on a 1951 vintage Baldwin M this week. When the damper pedal is
down (dampers off the strings), and notes are played (oct. 5 & 6,
expecially), there is a "whooshing" sound, as if the strings have been
stroked with a brush or cloth. It is also similar to the sound of old,
elongated tri-chords lifting through the strings...but this is NOT the
source of the sound. The waste end (hitchpin, non-speaking length) has been
felted/muted from B2-E4, with typical factory felt (not thin string-braid).

If I place a cloth on the bass strings, next to the dampers, the whooshing
is greatly reduced. I am having trouble understanding what the source of
this sound is. It is also similar to a plate-ring sound, but much more
pronounced both in volume and sustain than plate-ring. Thanks for any
suggestions!
