A few centuries ago, there was a type of harpsichord, called a virginal. 
It was rectangular in shape, and the top was often in three segments.  The 
center was flat, and the outer panels sloped to the outer edges of the 
case.  This lid configuration was referred to as a "coffered top." History 
repeats itself.
