In my experience Mapes probably won't be able to help just from the serial
number, they've told me that the 243's had three different scalings.
If you give them the measurements of the closest wound string that is still
present, that string number and the string number(s) needed I've found
they've never failed me yet! If you order from Mapes give them the exact
measurements you take, they are pros they will not need you to subtract for
the hitch pin etc. Your new string will fit. Any doubts check their mailing
address, "Number 1 Wire Road" !
I know for a fact they've been in business since at least the '50's. We had
a music store and sold their stringed instrument strings back then.
