regimented rust

 I saw the same thing in a 1983 D which had failed in all respects which we rebuilt 8 years ago. I suspect some age specificity.

1984. I was wondering if this might be age range specific, and 
I haven't seen it before because I don't typically tear down 
pianos this young. Any enlightenment??
