Like measuring only bearing, yes. The two together, however, 
will give you a pretty good picture of the load carrying 
capability of the board. Bearing and crown measurements taken 
together are a valuable and much underutilized data set.

As a design tool, surely, not when you're looking at and 
evaluating an existing strung instrument.
