You can get the material at Rockler and it is not hazardous to machine it. It actually machines quite nicely if you use sharp blades/bits and don't dawdle in the path of the various cutters. I looks better than the method I was intending to use, and I find very positive comments in the archives about the quality of work that is possible with this tool. In the plans, the router slides on surfaces that have been made with 1/4 inch phenolic material. Where can I get this material (preferably in Canada, but USA sources would be helpful too)? Lee Valley used to carry it, but their website states they no longer stock it. Perhaps it is because if gives off such noxious fumes and dust when it is machined--quite hazardous. Does anyone have suggestions for an alternative material that would have appropriate strength, rigidity and dimensional stability? Maybe I would need something thicker than 1/4 inch.
