Julia, Assuming you meant "Motown", I'd suggest you watch "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", a documentary about the backup musicians who created that wonderful sound. From their descriptions of the early days, I wonder whether the pianos were even tuned for sessions.... It might also give you some leads to who might have the answers to your questions. And if you haven't seen it, check out "Buena Vista Social Club" for more marvelous music on poorly maintained pianos, particularly the playing of Ruben Gonzalez.
