Dale Chickering Bros. piano were not made by the same company?that was part of Jonas' family. According to the Atlas, Chickering Bros was started in Chicago in 1892 by Clifford Chickering, who was the son of Josiah Chickering, who was only related to the Boston Chickering. (Not sure of the relationship). I rebuilt a Chickering Bros grand once, and it wasn't pretty. There were no agraffs, and the action was a mess. (I don't remember if I had to deal with the kind of wippens Paul showed). It was owned by a church, who thought they bought a real Chickering. To make things worst, the piano was "rebuilt" by some yahoo who had no clue what he was doing. I basically had to start from scratch. But that's another story. Dale Below, and attached, is a picture of a whippen from a Chickering Bros (ugh) grand. It's the kind with a soft pedal mechanism that raises the hammer rest rail closer to the strings to reduce blow distance. Familiar to anyone? View full size Paul ? Who's never won?
