Isn't that interesting! It's one of those things that when invented makes you say "It seems so obvious, why wasn't it invented years ago!" I imagine it would also be possible to develop a "sound mirrors" lid that runs longitudinally, so that the pianist could sit side-on to the audience as usual. That might not convey the benefits referred to in the article however, as regards the pianist/conductor hearing a good balance between piano and ensemble, I guess. Best regards, David.
