Oooh, that's a great way to do it, John!

And now that you've described the method, I believe I've run into
factory-installed springs done that way.  I wondered about the curve in the
wire, but didn't take the thought any further.  Thank you so much.

  Rather than push it into the slot, I much prefer to drill another hole,
down the slot a bit. I then thread the end of the wire in, and pull tight. I
then goes into the slot much easier, and tighter.
  Then just glue, and add felt over the slots.
