I do both. Lapping the blade on the side of the wheel takes some manipulation and "feel". Oksana is the "keener" sharpener of the two of us, except when I'm carving bridges, and she goes to the glass plate as well.

That works for the cutting edge, Paul, but I find that to effectively flatten and polish the BACKSIDE of blades, etc., the Tormek is cumbersome at best.  Don't get me wrong, I love mine, but I disagree with the Tormek marketing that says you can use the side of the grinding wheel to flatten the back.  If the back of your blade requires even minor removal of material to get if flat, you will spend all day doing it on a Tormek.  I much prefer lapping my blades on sandpaper/emery cloth on a granite surface plate (or glass plate).  Way quicker.

Jim, indeed it does, with the leather stropping wheel after fine stoning it on the grinding wheel which has two grades available via a gradestone.

I agree with what Mr. Monroe says about the stones doing other tools well that can't be done on Tormek.  Also, and as importantly, how will you put that mirror finish on the back of your blades without using your Shaptons?  I don't think the Tormek system offers that option, does it?
