SNIP > ----------------------------- > Dave Doremus, RPT > New Orleans Hi Dave, I have not replace a Steinway keybed, nor have I replaced a whole keybed in any piano. But I have replace about half a keybed - the ends and the edge that meets the belly rail - arguably the more challenging half of a keybed. The ends were mortised into place on this old Knabe grand. Damage was related to termites - not flooding. The piano resides in a hospital lobby - the termite damage became apparent one morning when someone asked why the piano was lying on the floor rather than on it's legs....... I'm happy to share anything I might be able to help you with. You might want to start by doing a big overview of the damage to your piano. Give it a good look for case twisting/warping - you know, like a square grand case will twist with time - see if the top/bottom of the rim are on one plane. You stated that it looks like the bottom of the rim may have expanded - measure the width at the top of the case and at the bottom - that should answer that question. See if the keybed is square to the case sides - maybe measure a good piano - I am just assuming it should be square. Does anyone know what kind of adhesive S&S used 20 years ago for laminating the rim? Chances are it is some sort of modern water-proof adhesive - so maybe there is less rim damage than one might suspect. Just some initial thoughts. If you or the owner don't want the piano - I'd be interested. A couple pictures below of the keybed job I did a few years ago.
