Traveling with tools

My experience is that its best to not have any carry on luggage at all.
Its a drag to have to wait for your luggage to be sure, but its a very
large pain in the patootey to get stuck at security check and have to
have some of your stuff either dumped or shipped while you are trying to
get to the gate.

Worst part is that all this security in the end is rather useless... The
latest bit about allowing only small containers of personal items like
perfume liquids is the dumbest I've ever heard. A tiny little bit of
certain liquids can do a lot of damage..... I suppose before all is said
and done we will be required to go on board completely naked.

I just got off the phone with both Midwest Airlines and The Travel
    Safety
Administration regarding my need to take my tuning hammer and fork
    with me
to the convention. Midwest said that security is totally in the
    hands of the
TSA. The guy at TSA said that the ultimate decision on any carry-on
    item is
at the whim of the person who checks you through security. In other
    words,
if that person sees my hammer as a threat I have to put it in my
    checked in
luggage. I was hoping to get away with carry-on luggage only but it
    appears
I will have to submit to check-in. (sigh)

What are the experiences of others having traveled with tools as
    carry-on?
