I have a question about the picture of the sound board that is attached to the original post. Why is there a cutout in the bass section? I believe Terry Farrell posted some pictures of a sound board he had made with a similar shape a while back. Can someone please explain the unusual shape.

Inquiring minds would like to know if its not too much trouble.

No trouble. I believe the picture below is the "while back" picture you refer to. IMHO, the shape of this soundboard is normal.

I question why just about every other piano I have ever seen has an unusual extension of the soundboard up into the upper bass corner. Why don't they just make the piano case square and put a similar extension on the side opposite the upper-bass (where the concave portion of the case is)?

The soundboard terminates where the dark inset starts. Below is a picture of what is beneath that joint. It is a large cut-off bar (there is an original smaller cut-off bar). This belly is a Del Fandrich design. I believe that the upper-bass corner area of most soundboards do not operate efficiently, does not add to the sound coming from the soundboard, and the long rib lengths required for such a design contribute to early soundboard failure.

The absense of the upper-bass corner also makes clamping the soundboard edge during installation easier because, well, you can clamp it!

Terry Farrell
