I am consulting on the rebuilding of a twenty year old Steinway concert
grand. It has a crack in the plate that goes all the way around the strut next to
the lowest A string, about an inch behind (away from the player) the dampers.
The strut has not moved either side to side or up and down....yet.

Two questions: 1) What are viable repair for this, and; 2) can anyone
recommend someone capable of doing them in Southern California?

Alan,

Check out _http://www.locknstitch.com/_ (http://www.locknstitch.com/) up in
Turlock. They will do on-site work, or you can send them the plate. They
could answer questions about the strength and appropriateness of their technique.
