Terry and all,

You have a Julius Bauer. He ribbed his boards on both sides with
significantly thinner ribs than would be used if only on one side. I think
the net result was still more total rib thickness than normal. It has been
a while since I have rebuilt one of these things so my memory is getting a
little sketchy. I don't remember there being any significant crown
problems, though one had a lot of cracks....not fun. There are no
supporting wood struts, everything is held by the plate ie. Astin Weight.
They called it a floating plate. I can usually move a S&S B harp around
without any problems, but the plate in the 6' Bauer was a totally different
matter all together. The flange along the rim can go for 6 inches if I
remember correctly. Bauer was something of an experimenter connected with a
Wurlitzer plant in Chicago (I think) before he went off on his own.

These are not bad pianos perse, but I remember the actions be very
problematic... significant leverage issues. But that was when I knew a
whole lot less about such matters than now.
