CA glue---all the same?

Hi, Tom:
I had a similar experience years ago with small tubes of Super Glue from the local orange "box store". I even turned the piano upside down to make sure the glue was going in the right place. No luck, it did nothing. Then, at a convention, I mentioned this to a vendor that sold the Dryburgh glue. There was a chunk of pinblock showing how the glue had penetrated in the pin-holes. I asked about my experience, and why it didn't seem to work. He said, "You didn't use THIS glue, did you?" I said, "No. I used xxx." He said you must use "this" glue, and I bought a bottle of the Dryburgh extra thin glue, I think a 4oz. bottle. Next time I tried it to fix a loose pinblock it worked great. SO... Get the right stuff. Even if it seems watery enough, it probably won't work (as you found out). It has to be fresh. Old glue gradually gets thicker, expecially after it is opened.
BTW, I found some CA glue at my local Rockler's woodworking store that works fine.
    Good luck. FWIW,

Subject: CA glue---all the same?

List

Is there any difference in the quality of various brands of CA glue?

I have been using Lock-Tite Super Glue, and whereas it seems to work fine for various repairs, I have had a couple of pinblock treatments that didn't take. I used A LOT of it, too. It seems as thin a viscosity as the glue available from Schaff or the local hobby shop, so I don't think that is the problem. I've been buying it because it's available at the hardware store down the street, and I like that it comes in such small bottles.

But I've noticed that my eyes don't water when I use it. Today I bought a different brand of CA from the hobby shop, and man! I had to leave the area for awhile, it was so gaseously toxic!

I had initially thought that the last two pinblocks were just too far gone and that the glue couldn't make an impact. Now, I'm starting to think that the Lock-Tite glue might be weaker.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
