I didn't make my comment as a political one and I do think it belongs on the list because it speaks to the issue of employees generally. This is a different thing than working with one's father in the shop. In this case there are a couple of issues: One is compliance, and laws governing the employment of children are strict and came about because of a history of abuses by employers. Secondly, there is the issue of liability for the employer and safety for the child. In this business with all kinds of power tools and other things that are capable of inflicting serious injury, you would not want to open yourself up to a potential lawsuit or a life changing injury for the minor child. While thumbing your nose at what seem like burdensome and unnecessary laws is often tempting, most were put in place for a reason. Doing somebody a favor in exchange for one might on the surface seem like a good thing but there are potential downsides which should be carefully considered. I'll pass it on to the family. But it's not like someone would be forcing a child to work. It would be a situation in which one would voluntarily exchange work for knowledge. Oh well, I'm not in the mood for solving social problems today. :) JF Erwinspiano at aol.com wrote: David --Dean Having hired some that young I can tell you that the government requires a work permit. I am grateful I lived in a generation where I was taught & enjoyed learning to work at a very early age. Farms ,family business, raking leaves etc. It saved me from many things. So many things I learned from Dad & especially my grandfather the farmer I've already passed on to my kids. Well not the tractor driving part. !! As all know Children of very young ages learn things faster than even 14 year olds. Mozart & many who had oppurtuntiy to sit at the feet of masters from an early age. I'd love to see some kind of shift toward earlier ages in terms of vocational training but No one is for exploiting children. Dale We should probably take this off list You mean like our freedom to exploit children?
