I use basically the same method, but rather than a wooden dowel that indeed would deteriorate, I use a bolt with a diameter slightly smaller than the lead - one bang and it's outtaa thar! A block with a hole a little larger than the key lead is placed under the key lead. The dowells deteriorate with use. Jut give them a quick touch on the sanding disk to restore them.
