Hi Ric, Back to the problem on hand... - Since the balance weight and friction seem fine, I will assume that the action doesn't feel heavy when you play a slow, quiet piece. Is that correct? Can you confirm? - Since the BW is in spec, helper springs are not part of the design, unless someone modified the action and added lead. Any evidence? - I mentioned this before, but will ask again: if there is marginal clearance between the back check and the hammer tail, there could be some contact on the way up when you play really fast or loud. This happens because of the flex in action parts when you apply force. You will not notice the problem when you move the hammer slowly. - Could the action centers be too tight? I am sure you would have noticed that. - Take a few sample hammers off and measaure the strike weight. Here is the reason I say that: with the nice 5.5 ratio, good BW, and no excessive lead, it would seem that the strike weight must be fine, but some (European) manufacturers hide addittional lead under the key tops. This is lead they know for sure will be needed, so it goes in automatically during production. The rest is visible and amounts to adjustment lead.
