Hi Richard, As part of the removal of old springs I clean out the slot thoroughly with an x-acto blade. Insert the new springs, with alignment rod as you have done. Then with pliers, bend and pull each end down and back in to the slot. grabbing the wire near the end helps and it takes a bit to develop a technique. Do not clip the ends yet. The tails will not be all the way down in the slots. Load the rail with hot hide glue (a section at a time), lay your cloth on and back with a piece of aluminum U channel or appropriate piece of wood, clamp with several spring clamps. Gently pull and align any stray tails. Once every section is finished and clamped, leave overnight. Remove rod(s), remove clamps, cut tail ends with flush cutters. Looks like original.
