I think Israel Stein was talking about the Big Band I
play in when he wrote about  "...poorly maintained
instruments,  poorly trained and under-rehearsed
musicians, small, darkly lit venues..."

I had a good laugh.  We resemble that remark.

I'll tell my band members that we truly are "HIP" when
we pull out those hot tunes from 1932:  "Historically
Informed Performers".
