My understanding is that they are there to provide alignment and contact 
area - both of which they do - but I can also see that the level to which 
they do pales compared to a rail that has a well-cut hump at the screw hole 
that would provide very good alignment help and will provide 100% support.

Fair enough. Now I understand exactly what you are saying, and I think it 
has merit. I'm not convinced the current setup won't work (and I realize you 
are not saying that definitively either), but I do see the potential. 
Hmmmmmm.... Okay, where is that catalog.......
