Can't say. And I'm not even sure it's the material itself that is causing the noise. But there is noise, and it does seem to be generated by the backcheck. There are plenty of pianos out there these days with Ecsaine checks, butts, knuckles, and catchers. Why would Steinway's Ecsaine be noisy when no one's complained (as I recall) about, say Yamaha?
