Judge orders sale of drug baron's house Apr 14 2006



 
THE house of a drug baron who made at least £1 million smuggling cocaine into the UK inside pianos is to be sold in order to recover proceeds of his crime.
Gary Vian, 44, of Crest Road, South Croydon, and fellow crook Paul Martin, 51, from Bermondsey, had the musical instruments specially made with secret compartments where they could stuff the illicit cargo.
They were caught after police hid bugging devices in their safe house and recorded them discussing their plans.
The dealers were then caught driving a van full of cannabis resin hidden inside revolving bookcases and a chair in the shape of a Harley-Davidson motorbike.
At the Old Bailey last year Vian was convicted of conspiracy to supply cocaine with ringleader James Ward, 53, and was jailed for 14 years.

Martin was jailed for 12 years after admitting the charge before trial.
Financial experts have since worked out Vian benefited by £1,390,901 from the plot but investigators could only track down limited proceeds of crime to confiscate.
At the Old Bailey on Tuesday Judge Stephen Kramer QC ordered that Vian's £250,000 home be sold.
