trouble removing the plate

I had trouble removing the plate from a Mason & Hamlin upright too. The
right key bed support had to have a notch made to get at one screw. Even though
it had five or six screws into the side of the piano case, it was also glued.

Then when the plate was loose, it still couldn't be removed due to a piece of
walnut moulding glued to the case top that was wider than the top to hide the
top edge of the plate casting. I damaged the moulding trying to remove it,
so will have to cut a new one when it goes back together.

It was obvious this piano case was built up after the sound board and plate
were attached with little consideration to future disassembly for rebuilding.
Planned obsolesence?
