go bars

I think any good hardwood will work well. I think white ash is a popular wood to use. I have a bunch of go-bars made from red oak that work very well. Pick a wood that doesn't splinter/crack easily. My oak may not be the best choice as I had one bar crack and launch across my shop. Fortunately no one was in the trajectory of the very sharp spear that went flying!

Mine are about 18 millimeters square - but that just depends on how much pressure you want to apply with each go-bar. I'd recommend cutting an experimental go-bar and test numerous dimensions until you find the pressure you are looking for. You can vary the length a little bit also to vary pressure.

Are the go-bars for ribbing a panel? Have you considered going pneumatic? I know a guy who has a couple ugly but very stout pneumatic rib presses for sale - or make 'em yourself - they're really pretty simply to construct.

List, I'm ready to make new go bars for an old sound board press. They will need to be about 40". Information on materials and dimensions would be greatly appreciated from those of you with experience.
