Squeaky Sustain

If the pitman is going through a bushed hole and it is smooth on both ends..(friction at both ends), the correct repair is a retrofit. I believe if you search the archives for retrofitting the pitman or Steinway pitman, you will find more info.

What I do on a regular basis:

I make up a number of 1/2" doweling of slightly different lengths similar to a typical pitman length. Glue front rail punchings to each end. Set aside to dry and keep in a kit for this work.

Obviously everything has to taken apart...action removed...the lyre might not be in the way...?

With a forstner bit, 1 & 1/4 inch, drill out the hole going up through the keybed. Just use it as your reference. It is tricky getting the bit to bite and you might chatter up the keybed bottom a bit...a little black paint will hide it.

With a forstner bit, 3/4 inch, drill into the damper tray about 1/2 a punching thickness. It will hold the punching on the new pitman. Drill the same into the damper lever.

Assemble and make a guess on the correct length of new pitman. Try it out. If too much play put in one of your longer ones.

You will never have a squeek from that source again and you don't need any lubricant.
