Dave,

Sorry, no pics but yes, the key goes across the joiner upside down. I
have a 4" Shopsmith joiner and if the key button is still present it
ride right along the straight edge of the machine. The key crosses the
cutter head at an angle. The back checks (if a grand) and the capstans
are on the other side of the machine out of the way.

If the keys are really short I sometimes need to lengthen the cut with a
sharp chisel or utility knife.
