I'm not so sure, not on a Steinway -- unless the bridge was moved or strings were replaced with wrong sizes or mislabled wire, or something. I think I'd systematically muffle the pedal assembly, all the backscale, etc., just to see if it can be quieted and isolated. But since it occurs over a range of 8 notes, it is unlikely to be sympathetic vibration, as John said, either in the piano or elsewhere in the room. So ... It's a real stumper. I'll be interested to see how this one comes out. The overtone sounds like an out of tune cymbal or bell about a seventh above the fundamental. It can first be heard immediately after initial impact, and has a long decay. It is not a sympathetic vibration from elsewhere in the piano. It occurs whether the string is struck with the hammer or plucked. The strings have been replaced, leveled, and terminations checked. Nose bolts are tight. Hammers are new Steinways. Hammer voicing reduced the overtone on some notes, but not on others. The piano has very little downbearing in the tenor, but pressing upward under the bridge in this area does not affect the problem.
