All the Hardmans I have seen are actually quite well
built. I am guessing that the beating is caused by
kinks in the wire formed by years of standing below
pitch, followed by bringing up to pitch, which moved
the kinks into the speaking length.
( A good point for convincing folks to have their
pianos tuned at least once a  year. )
