If for some reason you can't use the old rail, you can index a new one by 
placing it
next to the letoff buttons and marking opposite the center of each. I just 
did this
when making a new spring rail for an upright being converted from butt 
plates to
flanges. It's not hard.

Butt springs are very forgiving about spacing.
