Mercury is the big hazard from current coal-burning plants. Maine has a big
problem with it; they have no coal-burning plants, but they're downwind of
the Canadian ones.

Mercury is highly toxic, especially to fetuses (remember Thalidomide?).

When gasoline prices get high enough, coal liquification (liquifaction?)
will become economically feasible, and that should be a nice clean source.
Turns out we have *huge* coal reserves -- still!
